A Shift to Suburban Homesteading

Brittany’s journey into homesteading began in 2020, a year that sparked many new hobbies and interests for all of us. As a millennial, Brittany’s initial steps towards a more natural lifestyle were motivated by a desire to be more eco-friendly and health-conscious, especially after becoming a mother. What started as an Instagram challenge with a friend quickly evolved into a full-fledged passion for suburban homesteading.

Embracing Small Spaces: You Don’t Need Acres to Homestead

One of the biggest myths about homesteading is that you need a lot of land to grow your own food. Brittany debunks this myth by sharing her experience of maximizing a small suburban backyard. She emphasizes the importance of growing what you love to eat and making every plant count. Instead of planting generic flowers, Brittany recommends growing dual-purpose plants like herbs, which are both beautiful and functional.

Overcoming Limiting Beliefs in Homesteading

When starting out, Brittany believed that to be a true homesteader, she had to do everything herself, from gardening to making sourdough bread. However, she quickly realized that it’s essential to prioritize and focus on what truly matters to you. Homesteading should not be about checking boxes but about creating a sustainable and enjoyable lifestyle.

Practical Tips for Suburban Homesteaders

Brittany offers several practical tips for those looking to start their suburban homesteading journey:

  1. Start Small: Begin with simple projects and gradually expand your skills.
  2. Plan Ahead: Preparing for your gardening season early can save time and money.
  3. Utilize Space Wisely: Even in small spaces, you can grow a variety of plants by being strategic.
  4. Herbalism Made Easy: You don’t need to grow all your own herbs. Start with what you can manage and consider purchasing high-quality herbs from reputable sources.

Finding Inspiration and Avoiding Overwhelm

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the seemingly perfect lives portrayed on social media. Brittany advises finding inspiration from various sources but staying grounded in your reality. Whether it’s following knowledgeable homesteaders online or connecting with local farmers, draw inspiration in a way that motivates rather than overwhelms you.
