Sourdough dutch oven bread is a delicious one-pot-wonder that is simple enough for even the most novice baker.

Our Daily Bread
I think one of the best smells in the world is fresh baked bread straight from the oven.
That first slice, slathered in butter. Filling your senses and scorching your tastebuds because you couldn’t wait for it to cool. Ahhh bliss.
One of my goals in life is to make all of our bread, no more grocery store loaves. I think that’s when I’ll really feel like the little homesteader I am in my own mind.
For some reason, baking bread from scratch has always seemed a little overwhelming to me though. But after finding this recipe, I am no longer afraid!
I Like Simple
So the sourdough bread recipe that I found from The Elliott Homestead was absolutely perfect! Assuming that you have salt & water, it is only 3 ingredients and a few steps. Plus, it is honestly delicious. Crusty outside, fluffy inside, perfect for sopping up homemade soup, pairing with fresh pasta, or creating my savory sourdough breakfast bake.

Ingredients
- 7 cups whole wheat flour
- 3 cups sourdough starter (fed and bubbling)
- 2 tbsp sea salt
- 3 1/2 cups water
Directions
- In a large bowl, mix all ingredients.
- Cover and let rise in a warm spot for 12-18 hours.
- Preheat dutch oven and lit in 500Β° oven for 45 minutes.
- Once heated, sprinkle bottom of dutch oven with a tablespoon or so of flour, then gently pour in the dough.
- Cover with lid and bake for 30 minutes.
- Turn oven down to 400Β°, remove lid, and bake for another 15 minutes.
Notes
I love to bake with einkorn flour. It’s an ancient wheat grain that hasn’t been hybridized and is more easily digested. Because of this, that might make this sourdough recipe an especially good option for folks with digestive issues or wheat/gluten sensitivity.

This recipe is always a big hit at my house. I’ve even baked mini loaves to use as bread bowls for soup and chili. Plus it looks really fancy, so everyone thinks I slaved over it when it really only takes a few minutes of actual work!

Oh fun! I’ll have to try that, where do you get sour dough starter? I’ve done the 5 minute artisan bread (google that) and it’s delicious too! People are super impressed when it literally took less than 5 minutes!
Caitlin
I will definitely have to try that! I actually made my own starter from the recipe below & it turned out great, but you can also order them online. I have a link to one in the original post.
